in Mauston after a brief illness. She was born August 25, 1919 in
Chicago, Ill. to Paul Fedder and Gertrude (Krause) Fedder of Hammond,
Ind. Ellen graduated from Rockford College and received her Master’s
degree in Mathematics from Radcliffe University. She married R.
Creighton Buck on December 28, 1944, long time professor of Mathematics
at the University of Wisconsin. Ellen and Creighton started a lifetime
of personal and professional union at the Harvard Mathematics Club where
Ellen was the first President of the Club and Creighton was Secretary.
She co-authored 2 mathematics textbooks with Creighton and authored
Calculus guides for the US Armed Forces Institute.

이 책 (위의 Fitzpatrick) 은 인터넷 서점 아마존에서 대체로 큰 호평을 받고 있는 듯하다.
아마도 요즈음의 물리학도(대학교 학부)를 위해 추천할 만한 책일까?

Nope, Kaplan is no good (I just donated my copy to a charity bookshop yesterday: don't know why I bothered hanging onto it). At best, he covers some of the usual topics in AC in pedestrian style: partial derivatves, multiple integrals, vector calc, infinite series, Fourier series, ODEs, complex variables. The style is old, the presentation cramped and opaque.
Problem with AC is it's so ill-defined: it can run the gamut from multivariable calc to a course in real analysis, depending on the university. I don't know what Fitzpatrick covers (can't see the contents at Amazon). What's the syllabus?
Kaplan은 좋지 않다!! 고 합니다. 내 의견도 마찬가지 입니다. 내가 봤을 때에도, 정말 화나게 되더군요.
내용/문제를 읽어보면.. "난 이것을 모른단 말이야.. 왜 내가 이것을 알고 있다고 생각하고 목록만 나열하고 이것을 이용한 문제를 내지?" 라는 외침이 저절로 났었습니다.
왜 이 책이 한국에 그렇게 많이 돌아다니는지 알 수 없었습니다. 왜 여러 양자역학 책 등등에서는 이책이 추천 참고도서로 되어 있었는지 알 수 없고, 실망스러운 상황이었습니다.
그리고, AC(Advanced Calculus 고등 미적분)이 ill-defined (정의가 제대로 안 되었디, 명확하지 않다) 는 것도 동의 합니다. Buck 책을 접하고 나서 다른 고등 미적분 원서들을 두루 구경했지만, 내가 원하는 내용을 Buck 책만큼 설명하고 있는 책이 없었습니다. 다루고 있는 내용이 매우 다양하고, 일치하지 않더군요.

최근에 facebook 수학그룹에서 baby Rudin 이라는 것을 처음 들은지 얼마 안되었는데...

사실, 집에 이 책을 갖고 있지만, 별다른 감흥을 받지 못하고 있는....
내 관심사가 아니라서,....
나는 오로지 Nabla 를 잘 배우고 싶은...
미적분이면서, 부피/ 면적/ 길이 같은 기하학과 완전 혼합된 '정의'를 가지고 있는...
그리고, 신비한 Jacobian 행렬식(야코비안), 외적 (Outer product), Hessian 행렬,
이것을 책 전체에 걸쳐서 정말로 친절하고 자세하게 다루고 있는 것이
Buck, Advanced Calculus 인 것으로 봤다... (다만, 대충 훑어만 볼 수 있었다는 것이 정말로 안타깝고, 책을 자세하게 따라서 읽고, 같이 증명하면서 문제를 풀면서 읽지 못했다는 것이 안타깝다.)
대학교를 (아주 우스운 성적으로 간신히...)졸업하면서 후배들에게 몇권 사준 적이 있고,
나도 이 책을 개인적으로 3권정도 보유하고 있다.... 하지만, 이 책을 제대로 읽은 적이 없다...
내 인생에서 참 아쉽고 유감스러운 일이다. 젊은 시절엔 실패했지만, 죽기 전에라도 한번 제대로 읽고 이해했으면 하는 바람(아집, 미련, ...)이 있다.
